Version 1.8.5: Day and night, work and prayer
October 28, 2026
Since version 1.8.4 we have made the abbey's day and night follow what you see.
Day and night
- At night everybody sleeps. Building, repairs, laying in stores, the market and admitting newcomers wait for the dawn, and every button says how long until then.
- Little is made at night: the kiln is banked, fish traps stay in the ponds and the mill keeps grinding where it has water. By day the abbey makes up for it, so a whole day brings as much as before.
- In eras I and II the brothers rise for the Vigils at half past one, and the night is then a good time for prayer.
- If the game was closed or hidden for at least three minutes during the night, it wakes at dawn, with nothing gained or lost for the night that passed.
The brothers
- Each brother works at his own craft: brickmakers at the brickworks, fishermen at the ponds, farmers in the fields, scribes copying books. A workplace with nobody at it makes nothing, and with everybody at prayer no work gets done.
- When you admit a newcomer, you choose his craft. The craft the abbey needs most is chosen already.
- Brothers can fall ill and lie in the infirmary until they are well, and a guest may ask to be rowed ashore or shown the way: the brother who goes is away for a while, his work waits, and you see when he is back.
- The prayer control now has two sides, Praying and Working, each with its own “+” and “−”. Holding a button moves several brothers at once.
The pace
- At the move to Chorin the brothers lay out ponds, a grange, a brickworks and a chapel as large as on the island, so nothing has to be raised twice. The ten minutes of double production after the move are gone.
- A novice comes at most every two game minutes (two may come together), and the button says when the next one is due. Brothers that a decision or an echo brings come as soon as there is room for them.
- The friezes of the collection are now spread over the whole chronicle instead of nearly all coming by the choir.
- The goals are priced anew so that every era keeps its length, and the gifts of the echoes are now worth a few minutes of the abbey’s own work.
Also
- Every phenomenon of nature has its own short melody when it begins and its own sound while it lasts.
- Pilgrims come a little more often and stay longer.
- The update bar needs only one tap.
- A tooltip opened with a tap stays until you tap again.
- Meters at 100 % no longer offer a button that adds nothing, and two quick taps never build two buildings.
- The small works card speaks of “one of a pair” only where it shows a pair.
